My wife and I had lunch there the other day, the food and service were very good! I only wish they were open for dinner.

I like to think I have good taste, but doesn't everyone? Still, I'm surprised by the overall ratings of this place, because the food was surprisingly good in my opinion. [ THE SCENE ] Our day wasn't going as planned. I had a great hiking weekend all mapped out, however, the waterfalls I intended to visit had road closures and other technical difficulties that caused me to change destinations. I burned a good portion of our day driving gravel mountain roads only to turn back and by then we were all frustrated AND hungry! The Falls Café not only helped fill our bellies, but also provided a beautiful place to reset our plans. [ THE EXPERIENCE / FOOD ] It felt a little cramped inside so we opted to eat on the balcony. The covered dining balcony is open and airy with a quaint mountain cabin feel and comes with a lovely side view of Toxaway Falls. Between the three of us we ordered a burger, a patty melt and a egg salad sandwich for our meals and fried pickle spears + broccoli cheese bites for our sides. The girls had water while I enjoyed the sweet tea (4 stars). I didn't know what to expect, but without a doubt the food was surprisingly tasty! THE PATTY MELT was exceptionally good along with the nicely seasoned steak fries (4.5 stars). Their version included grilled bell peppers, which I thought was an awesome touch to this classic burger! I also really enjoyed the fried pickle spears (4.5 stars), although some might prefer slices and the broccoli cheese bites were tastier than I anticipated (4 stars). My wife almost NEVER orders anything as is from ANY menu and asked if they would do a half egg salad and half Tuna salad sandwich. She was not as thrilled with her half & half sandwich as she hoped, but Jess (our yelp daughter) seemed to enjoy her burger. [ THE SERVICE ] SERVICE was fairly quick on some things (like the appetizers) and slower on others (like the bill), but the owner took special interest in us and made the slow times go by much faster. We also struck up a conversation with a couple at a nearby table as we shared hiking plans and hotel recommendations. They were staying @ nearby Brook Trout Inn and told us how amazingly comfortable the beds are so convincingly that we briefly considered changing hotels! [ THE VERDICT ] I without a doubt would happily return to The Falls Café & Grill for another meal!!! As a matter of fact, their patty melt will be on my mind for many years to come and will likely be my go-to meal whenever I'm passing through the area on a new adventure. They have a number of salad options that will please my wife as well as a good selection of sandwiches, wraps, quesadillas and burgers for anyone else who might happen to be in our hiking crew. But be sure to check their hours if you plan on eating here! They have very short hours and are only open between 11am and 3pm Monday-Saturday. ENJOY 2021 / 66
NO LONGER "THE FALLS" !!! Now Los Vaqueros. It's now a really good Mexican Restaurant. Happy to have this new restaurant in our area. Service was excellent and their food was fresh, inspired and delicious. My Margarita was perfect, with the house Tequila being a pretty decent blanco. My tacos had a great flavor and the added greens plus fresh cilantro really melded together nicely. The Molcajete was beautiful and served in the traditional volcanic stone carved bowl. Absolutely beautiful views of Lake Toxaway Falls.
